Why Demolition?
Controlled demolition offers significant advantages over other alternatives, including far less risk, it’s more cost effective and disruptions to surrounding businesses, residents, and traffic will be less. It is a relatively quick process, with the actual demolition taking less than a minute and cleanup only a few hours.
What to expect on demolition day.
Starting the week of July 18 demolition preparations will be done on site and VDOT signage will notify residents of road closures. On the morning of July 21st, the main gate to the station will be blocked and traffic on Old National HWY (Rt 821) will be blocked from 7:30 am until 8:30am. If traveling near the Mecklenburg Power Station expect the presence of police, and traffic delays .
Once there is final confirmation that the area is clear, the building will collapse in less than twenty seconds after the initiation of the first demolition charge.
Once the controlled demolition is complete, crews will move in to survey the area to ensure that it is safe. After the “All Clear,” cleanup and the reopening of streets will begin. It is anticipated this will only take a few short hours.
