43rd Annual LakeFest – September 18th & 19th – CANCELED

The 43rd Annual Lakefest has been canceled. The Board of Directors of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce has decided to cancel due to the Phase 3 restrictions in hosting large events, which would only allow 1000 attendees, and as we all know, Lakefest is a largely attended event. It wasn’t an easy decision due to the economic impact Lakefest has for the county but it is in our best interest for us to hold value to the well being and safety of our community and for those attending.

Tourism & Arts Relief Grant

Announcement from Mecklenburg County Tourism:

Tourism is an important economic driver in Mecklenburg County. We recognize the challenges that have fallen on our small businesses since the Covid-19 pandemic began, and we have put forth our best efforts to respond to those needs. The Gift Card Match Program was established earlier this year to help our for-profit businesses recoup lost income and it proved to be very successful. In fact, we are set to run two more rounds of that program in September and December.

We realize, however, that a distinct group of non-profit organizations also play a vital role in driving visitors to Mecklenburg, and we would like to offer assistance to those organizations as well, through the new Tourism & Arts Relief Grant.

Utilizing CARES funding, we will award $200,000 in grants to 501(c)3 and 501(c)6 organizations located in Mecklenburg County, who’s missions are strongly tied to tourism &/or the arts. Some examples of organizations who may be eligible are: Chambers, Museums, Historic Attractions, Theaters, etc.

Some limitations will apply, but the overall goal of this grant is to help with recovery of lost revenue due to Covid-19. The maximum grant award for any application will be no greater than $20,000.

Applications will be open from Sept 1st through Sept 14th. To learn more, please click the link below.

Wine Festival CANCELED FOR August 29th

Wine Festival CANCELED FOR August 29th. The Clarksville Lake Country Wine Festival slated for August 29th has been canceled. The Board of Directors of the Clarksville Chamber of Commerce has decided to cancel the Wine Festival in light of the continuing presence of the COVID 19 virus in Mecklenburg County.  Executive Director Sheila Cuykendall has been working closely with the Health Department and the ABC to make the Festival as safe as possible.   Even though all protocols were followed, the Board felt the risk to the Town and its citizens was too great to take.  Director Cuykendall said “We are very disappointed to be forced to cancel but believe the health and welfare of the Town and all its citizens is a priority now.   We will be back next year with a bigger and better Festival.”

GO VA Region 3 Aids Regional Coalitions for COVID-19 Recovery

The Southern Virginia Regional Alliance (SVRA) and Virginia’s Growth Alliance (VGA) have joined forces with a number of other collaborative partners to create a Bridge to Recovery program to support the GO Virginia Region 3 service area as it recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.

GO Virginia State Board approved $925,000 for Bridge to Recovery to provide immediate and impactful support to businesses through the multiple recovery periods of the pandemic and bridge supply chain needs of companies with service providers.

“This is wonderful news for Region 3,” said chairman Randy Lail. “These projects relate to the impact that COVID-19 has had on businesses throughout our region, specifically the Bridge to Recovery project led by Southern Virginia Regional Alliance and Virginia’s Growth Alliance. These two regional economic development organizations span all of Region 3 and will bring needed resources to help businesses recover.” He adds, “These projects also illustrate the ability of GO Virginia to pivot quickly as circumstances change.”

Bridge to Recovery will create a network that enables businesses who need specific professional services or products due to COVID-19, to connect with businesses in the Region 3 footprint who have those services and products. Those with the alliances hope to make it an efficient way for businesses to find what they need to re-open or grow during this unusual economic situation.

The program’s vision is to ensure the support is immediate, that it deploys the GO Virginia contributions to work inside the region and that it makes a lasting impact on the businesses it supports. The funds will be leveraged by organizational match with potential for public and private sector contributions and will provide support to businesses located within all localities in GO Virginia Region 3.

SVRA economic developers and partners formed the SoVa COVID-19 Task Force and expanded to include chambers of commerce across the SVRA region in March. Virginia’s Growth Alliance joined the effort and, in April, expanded it across the eastern GO Virginia Region 3 territory. Region 3 territory consists of the cities of Danville and Martinsville and the counties of Amelia, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, and Prince Edward. The Task Force has polled, surveyed and benchmarked data for existing industry needs and best practices among other regions and states. The Bridge to Recovery program supports further assessment of supply chain needs for recovery as well as identification of suppliers. In addition, it provides funding for the company or service provider solutions and PPE needs.

The following businesses are invited to apply as a prequalified supplier:

  • Suppliers of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Companies who provide PPE conversions (construction and building projects for COVID-19)
  • Service providers who help companies with COVID-19 issues (i.e. accounting, legal, human resources, deep cleans, etc.)

Utilizing companies on this prequalified supplier listing will allow businesses to receive a cost match payment to suppliers of up to $20,000.

Apply online at www.SoVaBridgeToRecovery.com to be on the list of prequalified suppliers and to apply for funding to support COVID-19 recovery work for your business or contact Lgreen@nullSVRA.org or Jeff@nullvagrowth.com.

Press Release: Round Two of the Mecklenburg County Gift Card Match Program

For Immediate Release

Mecklenburg County’s Gift Card Match Program is Back for a Second Round

This round is set to put $200,000 directly into the hands of local businesses

On Thursday, Aug 6th, Mecklenburg County’s CARES Act Committee approved a request by the

County’s Tourism Coordinator, to fund a second round of the Gift Card Match Program at

$100,000. The program, first launched in May of this year, is designed to support small

businesses impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic by offering a dollar-for-dollar match on gift

cards purchased through the online store to any for-profit, locally-owned, non-franchise, retail,

restaurant or service-based business located in Mecklenburg County.

The first round was funded by special allocations made through the towns and the county

tourism department. “We had $22,000 to use as a matching fund in that first round, says Tina

Morgan, Mecklenburg County Tourism Coordinator, and in just under two hours, it was all gone!

Not only was that an amazing display of support by consumers willing and ready to shop local

but putting $44,000 into the hands of our local businesses made a real difference to those who

were supported. Some were able to instantly pay rent they had fallen behind on while others

were able to replenish inventory and forge ahead for a while longer. I am thrilled that we get to

offer this again in an even bigger way! Once this round is complete, $200,000 will go straight to

local businesses and shoppers will benefit in a big way by doubling their money!”

The Chase City, Clarksville and South Hill Chambers of Commerce remain unified in this effort

and will be working with all of the towns to reach businesses about this next opportunity to

participate. Registration is now open and small businesses can find the sign up form at

www.VisitMeckVa.com/ShopLocal. Interested businesses can also call any of the Chambers or

the County Tourism Office at 434-738-6191 to find out more information. Businesses do not

need to be a Chamber member to participate and they have until August 31st to sign up.

The online store will go live for customers to shop on Sept 8th at 6pm. Just visit

www.VisitMeckVa.com and click the store icon to shop. Here, customers will find gift

cards to participating businesses in the amount of $20 each. For each card purchased, the

program will match it for as long as the funds last. So, for $20, you receive a $40 gift card.

Customers will be allowed a $100 purchase limit in order to allow the funds to stretch across

more businesses and more customers.

The platform for the online store is made possible by Virginia’s Growth Alliance, a regional

economic development group, who had the site developed for retail businesses to use for free.

Any business interested in selling online (for free) can visit www.ShopLocalVGA.com.
