NEW GRANT PROGRAM FOR SMALL BUSINESSES – APPLICATION AVAILABLE AUGUST 10TH

New grant program aimed at assisting small businesses.  This is separate from the Small Business Recovery Assistance Program announced on June 18, 2020.

We have exciting news to share with you. The Commonwealth is launching a new grant program for small businesses and nonprofits called Rebuild VA. The program will provide grants of up to three times the applicant’s average monthly eligible expenses up to a maximum award of $10,000. The application will become available on August 10, 2020.

These grants are aimed at assisting small businesses and nonprofits that have faced economic distress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible entities include those in the following industry sectors: restaurant and beverage service, non-essential retail, exercise and fitness, personal care and personal grooming, entertainment and public amusement, private campgrounds, and overnight summer camps.

This statewide program is capitalized with $70 million, which means we will be able to assist approximately 7,000 businesses. Half of the proceeds will be directed toward small businesses and nonprofits located in economically disadvantaged areas, including ensuring adequate representation of women-owned and minority-owned businesses.

LAKEFEST POSTPONED & RESCHEDULED – SEPTEMBER 18TH & 19TH

It is with a heavy heart that the Chamber Board of Directors have all agreed that it is in the best interest of our community that we postpone the 43rd Annual Virginia Lake Festival to September 18th & 19th. Phase three starts July 1st and looking over the restrictions that the governor has cited limits the event beyond our control. We hung as long as we could hoping for the best, but we feel its best to reschedule to September where there may be less limitations. We know Lakefest is a huge economy booster for our community and this is why the decision was so hard to make. We hope everyone will understand and join us in September. It will be a grand event as we share the weekend with Lake Life Live and their rescheduled Embers concert which is being held on September 20th.

Thank you for your understanding and support

Sheila Cuykendall & the Chamber Board of Directors

Phase Three reopening to start July 1 – Next phase of reopening will allow social gatherings of up to 250 people.

Gov. Northam discusses Phase Three reopening plan details.

Virginia will enter Phase Three of the state’s Forward Virginia reopening plan on July 1, ending restrictions on restaurants, retail stores and bars, among other changes, Gov. Ralph Northam said Tuesday.

“This gives us about three-and-a-half weeks of Phase Two where we have been able to follow the data,” Northam said during his Tuesday COVID-19 press conference. “There continue to be surges in other states, and we are monitoring that very closely.”

Northam outlined Phase Three details last Thursday during his press conference.

Phase Three details will include:

  • Social gatherings of up to 250 people allowed.
  • Occupancy/capacity limits will be lifted on retail stores, restaurants, bars and breweries.
  • Museums, zoos and other outdoor entertainment venues will be allowed to open at 50% capacity, serving a maximum of 1,000 people.
  • Gyms and fitness centers will be allowed to operate at up to 75% capacity.
  • Personal grooming and hair salons will still need to follow physical distancing requirements.
  • Child care facilities will remain open.
  • Overnight summer camps will be closed.
  • Recreational sports will still require physical distancing.
  • Swimming pools will be able to operate at up to 75% capacity, with physical distancing in place.
  • Face coverings will still be required in indoor public spaces.

“It still means you’re safer at home, especially if you’re vulnerable” Northam said. “It means we’re still strongly encouraging teleworking. People still need to focus on physical distancing in all situations outside of their home. Face coverings are still the right thing to do in indoor, public spaces.

“I want to reiterate that everyone should continue to take this pandemic very seriously. Cases are on the rise in many other states, as I said previously. I do not want to see that happen in the commonwealth. Be cautious and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and the people around you.”

The County of Mecklenburg plans to apply for Community Development Block Grant funds up to $550,000 from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development for the Mecklenburg County Small Business Recovery Assistance Fund (SBRAF).

Through the Mecklenburg County SBRAF, the County will help businesses meet their long-term business goals by adjusting to COVID-19 demands.  Establishing safe and clean re-opening procedures, in accordance with the Governor’s guidance, is necessary for the safety of customers and employees. It will allow businesses to regain and sustain operations, ideally helping them retain existing staff, fill vacant positions, create new jobs, and become more efficient and resilient.
